MATCHAM MONKEY GOES BANANAS TO HELP LIGHT UP BLACKPOOL ILLUMINATIONS OPEN DAY

The Grand Theatre's cheeky mascot will swing into Blackpool Illuminations Open Day on Thursday 10th July

Don’t miss him!

Be a bright spark! Bring your little chimps to see the cuddliest character in town as The Grand Theatre’s Matcham Monkey swings into Blackpool Illuminations Open Day on Thursday 10th July to bring his own cheeky brand of monkey business to the fun.

Blackpool Council is proud to announce the return of its famous Illuminations Open Day for 2008. This is the one day in the year when the doors are thrown open at the famous Rigby Road depot to reveal an amazing grotto of halls, corridors and storage areas and a network of workshops where the world famous Illuminations are created.

This FREE event on Thursday 10th July 2008 from 10am to 8pm is even more special this year as this is the last opportunity for visitors to visit the depot before the Illuminations Department move to new premises in 2009.

Blackpool Illuminations staff, from artists, electricians, joiners, mechanics, painters, engineers to hi-tech boffins, work all year round to produce this electrifying show. They will swap roles for the day and become tour guides for the thousands of visitors expected on the day including schoolchildren, Brownies, Guides and Scouts as well as the general public.

This magical Open Day is a prelude to the main event where the bright lights of Blackpool beckon as the greatest and glitziest free show on Earth returns for another autumn crowd-puller! More lavish than ever before, Blackpool Illuminations blaze into life on switch on night (August 29th) – shining right through until 2nd November.

So go ape! Come and see Matcham Monkey at Blackpool Illuminations Open Day on Thursday 10th July.

Matcham Monkey will be going bananas at 10.30am and 6pm.

THE GRAND WENT BANANAS WITH IT'S FREE FAMILY FUN DAY FOR MATCHAM MONKEY!

Blackpool's Grand Theatre has launched its very own children's club... The Matcham Monkey Club

Blackpool's Grand Theatre went absolutely bananas on Friday 11th April with a fantastic free family fun day to launch the exciting new Matcham Monkey Club for 2 to 12 year olds.

Monkey business on the day included a bouncy castle, balloon modelling, face painting, crazy circus acts from Blackpool Circus School and some very special creepy crawly friends from Blackpool Zoo. Lancashire Constabulary's Town Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team and two police horses hoofed it down to the Grand to join in the fun, while two engines from Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service raced to the launch to give away fab freebies and offer community advice. Amazing prize giveaways included a Fifi and the Flowertots bicycle, signed Bolshoi Ballet shoes, Grand Theatre show tickets and the chance to feed the monkeys at Blackpool Zoo, and famous faces from upcoming shows popped in throughout the afternoon to say hello from Cinderella, Henry VIII and Queen Victoria to Darth Vader!

And Matcham Monkey himself made his very first outing to see all of his new friends.

Grand Theatre General Manager, Neil Thomson, said: “The Grand has launched the Matcham Monkey Club to encourage young people to engage in the theatre and to encourage their parents to bring them. The launch of the club also coincides with a marked increase in children's programming at the theatre.

"Friday's launch was an amazing day with around 2,000 visitors at the Grand throughout the afternoon, which has proved to us that this is just the sort of activity families are lacking in the local community and are looking to join.

"We designed Matcham Monkey ourselves and named him after the Grand's original architect, Frank Matcham, as it’s important our club members are aware of the wonderful history of the building. I think we are one of the first theatres in the UK to have a costume character and we decided to go that way as they are so popular with children."
