POWERFUL SIXTIES DRAMA AT BLACKPOOL'S GRAND

05-09-2008 | Author: Press Office

Blackpool theatre company In Yer Space brings the beautifully bittersweet Be My Baby
to the Lawrence House Studio on September 10th

Amanda Whittington’s potent play is a story of youthful fantasies of romance and marriage inexorably turning to outrage by powerless adulthood.

In Yer Space is a Blackpool theatre company consisting of past and present students of Arnold School. The students will perform Amanda Whittington’s poignant play Be My Baby to a backing track of sensational sounds of the 1960s in the Lawrence House Studio at the Grand Theatre from Wednesday 10th September to Friday 12th September.

The sixties weren’t swinging for all the young girls sent to unmarried mother and baby homes...

Mary is seventeen years old, single and seven months pregnant. Bundled off to St Saviour’s - a Church of England run mother and baby home by her 'concerned' mother who has arranged for the baby to be immediately adopted after it’s born, Mary finds comfort and friendship with the other girls at the home, but ultimately, like them, has to face up to her tragic situation alone.

Set in mid-Sixties England and featuring the uplifting sounds of 60s girl groups such as The Shangri-La’s and The Ronnettes, Amanda Whittington’s potent play is a story of youthful fantasies of romance and marriage inexorably turning to outrage by powerless adulthood.

Since forming in 1999, In Yer Space theatre company has built a reputation for developing and showcasing young talent through the presentation of challenging work with a cast made up of current and former pupils of Arnold School, many of whom are aiming to move on to drama school and a professional career in the performing arts.

Be My Baby comes to the Grand fresh from a sell out, three week run at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In Yer Space Artistic Director, Colin Snell, said: “Be My Baby has done phenomenally well at the Fringe festival with great reviews and audience figures that have been the best for a single show in ten years! Don’t miss us at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre next week!”

Be My Baby is at the Lawrence House Studio at the Grand Theatre, Blackpool from Wednesday 10th September to Friday 12th September at 8pm.

Tickets £8.50.
