This year, there is light (literally) at the end of the tunnel, with an opportunity to enjoy some of the most magnificent Christmas decoration displays.
Of course, it would be rude of us not to mention our beloved Blackpool, bringing this year, a whole new enchanting light show “Frost Fairies” and a very exciting illuminated festive bauble! Wrap yourself up this year in the amazing displays and magical events taking place as part of the town’s ‘Christmas by the Sea’ festival.

World’s Best Christmas Decorations – Rockefella Centre, New York
Rockefeller Center, New York
It isn’t a true Christmas in New York City without a visit to the Rockefeller Center. Here you will find a magnificent 77-foot Norway Spruce decorated in over 45,000 lights. Every year visitors flock here to watch the famous ‘switching on of the lights’ event, with many enjoying the magnificent view from the center’s famous ice-skating rink.
This year, the 89th Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 1 December 2021 and as always, broadcast live on NBC.
Approximately one million people per day visit the Rockefeller Centre during the festive season. It remains a familiar and nostalgic reminder of the holidays, for both locals and tourists.
Regent Street, London
London remains one of the most iconic places to visit during the Christmas season. Not just for its fantastic shopping but for its famous Christmas decoration displays. Regent Street in particular is a festive favourite with its iconic “Spirit of Christmas” light display, the largest of its kind in the country.
From the weekend of 13th-14th November 2021, 300,000 twinkling lights will be turned on, where Regent Street’s illuminated angels overlook and light the pavements for the capital’s millions of shoppers.
London has so much to offer in terms of Christmas displays. Enjoy the likes of neighbouring Covent Garden, Oxford Street and Carnaby Street who also have beautiful displays to enjoy. For an all-round festive experience this Christmas, a trip to the iconic window displays at Harrods and the magic of Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland are also a definite must.
Symphony of Lights, Hong Kong
Since 2004, residents and tourists have enjoyed the wonder of the ‘Symphony of Lights’, a daily light and sound show which sees over 40 buildings across Hong Kong’s skyline illuminated as far as the eye can see. It is the world’s largest permanent light and sound show and brings vibrancy and energy to enjoy during the festive season. Starting at 8pm every evening and enjoyed by millions of tourists each year, this mesmerizing display tells the stories of Hong Kong and its rich culture.
Canyon Road Farolito Walk, Santa Fe, New Mexico
For those seeking an alternative to your LED and laser displays, Santa Fe’s Canyon Road Farolito Walk is a Christmas celebration with a difference.
Taking place every year on Christmas Eve, this historic neighbourhood is beautifully lit with thousands of candles and farolitos (Spanish for a paper lantern). This beautiful tradition also sees people gather around small bonfires, singing carols, enjoying the warmth and glow of this special time of year.
Light Festival, Amsterdam
Illuminating the centre of this iconic city for a decade, the ‘Amsterdam Light Festival’ is an exciting collaboration of artists worldwide, who come together to put on some of the most impressive light shows during December and early January. This year, the festival celebrates its 10th birthday with new developed installations. It will also take a look back at nine years of this monumental festival, which brings contemporary issues to light, tells inspiring stories and transforms the urban surrounding.
Winter Illuminations, Tokyo
Tokyo’s ‘Winter Illuminations’ take on a competitive nature during Christmas with districts around the city trying to outdo the other with their displays. The displays are often found in central areas and close to train stations, and are a hot spot for the dating scene, where couples take romantic strolls to enjoy the lights. A popular and well-known display is Ao no Dokutsu (Blue Cavern), an electric version of blue grottos found in the Mediterranean. The illuminations are enjoyed so much by residents and tourists that many displays remain up and lit until February!
VanDusen Festival of Lights, Vancouver
A family favourite and enjoyed by visitors to Vancouver, this exciting display sees over one million lights set across 15 acres of the VanDusen Botanical Garden. Here you will discover a shimmering lake, covered in the glow of northern lights and within the Rose Garden, illuminated winter scenes, giving you that festive feel. The festival includes an eight-minute light show and you can visit this enchanting experience from late November to early January.
Christmas Lights Festival, Medellín
Colombia’s second-largest city sure knows how to celebrate Christmas. The darkness of its cartel days is now a thing of the past and their annual Christmas lights (Alumbrados Navideños) pay homage to this.
Millions of Christmas lights transform the city at night with the extra magical touch of shows and cultural events which families and tourists can enjoy. Over four million people visit the festival each year. With over 100 locations around the city decorated, the focus of the display is mainly around the Medellín River and La Playa Avenue. A beautiful city to take in the display of over 25 million LEDs.
