The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)
The Wolf of Wall Street, a biographical black comedy crime film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Terence Winter. It narrates Belfort’s perception on his career as a stockbroker in New York City and how his firm, Stratton Oakmont, engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street, which eventually led to his downfall.
Leonardo DiCaprio, a producer on the film, stars as Belfort, with Jonah Hill as his business partner and friend, Donnie Azoff, Margot Robbie as his wife, Naomi Lapaglia, and Kyle Chandler as FBI agent Patrick Denham, who aims to bring Belfort down.
The film was a huge success, grossing over $392 million worldwide making it Scorsese’s highest-grossing film. The film was not without its controversial issues and its morally ambiguous depiction of events, explicit sexual content, extreme profanity, depiction of hard drug use, and its use of animals during production. WARNING: It set a Guinness World Record believe it or not for the most instances of swearing in a single film. The Scorsese film flies through its mammoth 3-hour runtime, and features career defining performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey.
Nominated for several awards, including five at the 86th Academy Awards ceremony: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nominations for DiCaprio and Hill, respectively. DiCaprio won Best Actor – Musical or Comedy at the 71st Golden Globe Awards, where the film was also nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Paddington (2014)
Paddington tells the story of the character ‘Paddington Bear’ created by Michael Bond. The film stars Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington, with Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman in live-action roles.
The film tells the story of the eponymous character Paddington, an anthropomorphic bear who migrates from the jungles of Peru to the streets of London, where he is adopted by the caring Brown family. Kidman plays the role of a unscrupulous taxidermist, who attempts to add Paddington to her large collection.
Few know Colin Firth was originally set to voice the role of Paddington, before dropping out in post-production and being replaced by Whishaw.
The film grossed $268 million worldwide and received two nominations at the British Academy Film Awards: Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. A sequel, Paddington 2, was released in 2017.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Six Snowpiercer is a science fiction action film based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette.
The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris.
After an attempt to stop global warming via climate engineering catastrophically backfires, creating a new ice age in 2014, the remnants of humanity have taken to a circumnavigational train, the Snowpiercer, run by recluse transportation magnate Wilford. By 2031, the passengers on the train have become segregated by class, with the elite in the extravagant front cars while the poor are forced into squalid tail compartments by armed guards.
Urged by his father-figure Gilliam, Curtis and his second-in-command Edgar lead the tail passengers on a revolt after they realize the guards’ weapons have no ammunition. They free Namgoong, a captive security specialist, and his clairvoyant daughter Yona. Namgoong helps the tail army progress forward, but soon end up in a deadlock with more guards equipped with axes, overseen by Minister Mason. In the ensuing fight, Curtis allows Edgar to be killed so he can capture Mason and use her as a bargaining chip to end the battle. The tail army stays back to hold the guards captive, while Curtis takes Mason along with Namgoong, Yona, skilled fighter Grey, and Tanya and Andrew, two parents who have had their children taken from them to the front section of the train. They are unaware that Franco, loyal to Mason, escapes the tail army to rally more guards.
Snowpiercer received critical acclaim and has appeared on many film critics’ top ten film lists. Praise was primarily directed towards its vision, direction, and performances, particularly Evans’ and Swinton’s.
