Being in the know about the latest shows makes it easy to pick out those which best suit your tastes. Theatre lovers, critics and reviewers provide us with plenty of feedback on the shows to see, the shows to avoid and rumours about what’s to come too.
The best UK theatre blogs are regularly updated with the latest tips and recommendations for securing tickets as well as shows you simply can’t miss. As a lover of a good show being able to sit and enjoy a shared passion with bloggers from around the UK is great fun. Here are our favourite UK theatre blogs to follow in 2021.
Musical Theatre News
Informationals and almost real-time in its up-to-date listings, Musical Theatre News was created by Linda Sandeman. All fans of musical theatre will not be disappointed by the sheer volume of information to read through and enjoy. The blog incorporates News & Gossip with a dedicated section for Touring Musicals as well as a standard “What’s On” so you can be up to date with the latest musical theatre shows up and down the country.
Amy Stutz
Based in the Midlands and working at the Birmingham Hippodrome, Amy Stutz regularly updates her blog with all things theatrical. The best in theatre is regularly reviewed on her blog, with theatre reviews in Manchester, the Midlands and London all appearing in regular updates. As well as reviews you will find interviews with stars of the stage.
West End Wilma
West End Wilma has been around since 2012 but it wasn’t until 2017 we found out the real truth, Wilma wasn’t Wilma but Ed Baker – the face behind the character we all came to know as theatre fan Wilma. Ed’s mum even stepped up to the plate and played the role of Wilma for a little while until Ed let the cat out of the bag in 2017. Both Ed and his mum work together to review the latest shows, interview big stars and recommendations for theatre lovers looking for their next show.
There Ought to be Clowns
A theatrical diary of sorts and a little quirkier than your average theatre blog, There Ought to be Clowns takes things to a deeper level than some of the other blogs out there. You can expect comprehensive views of the latest shows and there is just so much content here you can’t be disappointed. There is also a “Not Theatre” section if you fancy something off topic but equally engaging.
Pocketsize Theatre
Another blog with great history online, dating back to 2012. Their team is committed to open-mindedness at every show they attend. They are passionate about their love for the theatre and want to share it with as many people as possible. They want to encourage a love of the arts in others through sharing their passion and you’ll find regular reviews and exclusive interviews on the site, as well as news updates and competitions.
West End Frame
Both a blog and a podcast, West End Frame offers up everything you could need to know about the West End. Interviews and reviews make up the bulk of the content and it’s a chance to get closer insight into many of the top stars of your favourite shows. The West End Frame Show is one of the most popular theatre podcasts out there too.
Glasgow Theatre Blog
Not all theatre blogs have to be based in London, and the Glasgow Theatre Blog is a fine example of this. It describes itself as ‘The best place for news, interviews and reviews of theatre in Glasgow and beyond’ and is the go-to place for Scottish theatre news and reviews. Often playing second fiddle to Edinburgh in the Scottish theatre stakes, it is great to find a resource dedicated to Glasgow and its local talent.
Rewrite this Story
Launched in 2015, Rewrite this Story is the online theatre platform of Olivia Mitchell. It began as a bit of fun to share her views on the theatre world in 2015 and it has grown significantly since then. The site now has a team of 20 reviewers based around the world, not just in the UK. Olivia Mitchell’s background in classical singing means many of her reviews tune in on the vocal performances within musical shows which gives this site a different feel to some of the others out there.
MyTheatreMates
Bringing together the experienced tam of Mark Shenton and Terri Paddock (the “Ma” and “Te” in Mates), MyTheatreMates aims to be a friendly and welcoming community for all fans of theatre. Both these guys have spent time working with WhatsOnStage.com so know what makes a good review, a compelling feature and an unmissable interview. MyTheatreMates brings together a much wider team of committed independent theatre bloggers who want to share their content on their platform, and it makes it’s a great way of bringing together a range of different voices and viewpoints on different shows.
Everything Theatre
In their own words Everything Theatre is “an honest and unpretentious guide to the London theatre scene”. They keep it real, honest and give you the chance to se what they really think about every show they review. This is another site that also runs a popular podcast so you can listen to their thoughts and opinions as well as reading the latest reviews and features.
Many bloggers have moved onto vlogging or creating podcasts to share their views and reviews. We believe there’s something compelling about a blog that speaks to its readers and captures the essence of a show with the written word. Recommendations and the views of others help to feed your passion for theatre and can be a great resource for shows to consider or hidden gems you may not have thought of.
We of course run our own successful blog right here and use it to share info about our latest shows, local news, and industry features to keep you coming back for more.
