Do you dare to enter The Red Room?
You better pluck up the courage…this is your only chance to see this dark and thrilling performance by the award-winning David Hughes Dance in the UK. The Red Room is coming to Blackpool’s Grand Theatre for one horror-filled night on Sunday 21 April.
The collaboration between acclaimed dancer David Hughes (choreography) and award-winning theatre maker Al Seed (direction) is a contemporary and visually shocking interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s 19th century classic tale, The Masque of the Red Death.
Barricaded in his mansion, a prince entertains a party of debauched revellers whilst the world outside teeters on the brink of plague-ridden apocalypse. But, as long as the wine flows and the musicians play what reason have they to care? The diverse company of performers weave a multitude of dance traditions – ballet, breakdance, contemporary dance, Bharatanatyam – with high-octane physical theatre to create a truly macabre horror show for the stage.
In the summer of 2009, David Hughes Dance completed a hugely successful tour including a run at The Traverse Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Festival. This was the first time in its history that the Traverse had programmed a dance company as part of its Festival Season – history was made! The Red Room received rave reviews and sell-out audiences, in addition to a Herald award and a Total Theatre Special Commendation. The company has since performed The Red Room internationally, and will now visit Blackpool Grand to present a one-off UK performance for 2013.
David Hughes Dance’s The Red Room is at The Grand for one night only on Sunday 21 April.
