Did you enjoy the acclaimed Channel Four TV drama Brian & Maggie?

Explore yet another fascinating side of Britain’s famous Iron Lady with the fiercely funny Handbagged at Blackpool Grand Theatre this April

It’s the untold story of the private meetings between Mrs Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II…

Make an unmissable appointment with Moira Buffini’s clever comedy HANDBAGGED at Blackpool Grand Theatre from Tuesday 8 April to Saturday 12 April.

It’s time to unlock the palace door to imagine the private conversations between former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II.

What an ideal follow on from the recent smash-hit Channel 4 TV drama Brian & Maggie…

Moira Buffini’s brilliantly funny play Handbagged will pay an unmissable call on Blackpool Grand this April to reveal just what might have happened over eleven years of weekly, behind-closed-doors meetings between The Queen and her most powerful subject, the then Prime Minister. The Crown meets the Iron Lady face to face as the destiny of the nation is shaped. And the laughs are royally good…

This razor sharp satirical comedy follows hot on the heels of Channel 4’s dazzling new drama Brian & Maggie starring Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter, which recreates the infamous 1989 interview between journalist Brian Walden and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This historic showdown triggered the downfall of Thatcher’s term as PM and her subsequent resignation. Brian & Maggie was written by RTS award-winner James Graham (Sherwood, Quiz, Brexit: The Uncivil War) whose gritty new production of Alan Bleasdale’s Boys From The Blackstuff will also roll into Blackpool Grand from Wednesday 5 March to Saturday 8 March.

This highly entertaining Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch and Theatre Nation Partnerships production of Handbagged explores the intense relationship between two of history’s most revered female leaders, and the legacy they each left behind. They may now be gone, but their shadows still loom large. Did the Monarch and the Iron Lady ever find common ground, or did their stiff upper lips reign supreme? Ronald Reagan, Denis Thatcher and an ensemble of familiar faces add to the biting satire and sharp humour, as the gloves come off and personalities clash.

Handbagged Director and Co-Creative Director of Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch, Alex Thorpe, said: “We are delighted to share this outstanding play across the country. At a time when female leadership is at the forefront of western global politics, it felt a perfect time to re-examine the titanic personal and political struggle of the two most powerful women of the modern era, in a defining moment in our country’s history.”
