Hot West End Shows Post-Covid – The West End is alive and kicking once more and theatres are filling with fans desperate to see the latest show.

Things have obviously been a little slower than usual to kick off this year but now the West End is back, the choice of shows in increasing and there are so many top shows to choose from now Covid is no longer keeping everything closed. Let’s look more closely at some shows you won’t want to miss.

 

 

Leopoldstadt

The 2020 Laurence Olivier Award winner for Best New Play arrived at Wyndham’s Theatre in August. The play focuses on the Hermann family in Leopoldstadt, the heart of Jewish Vienna. Their tale takes a sad turn as they’re forced to live through the horrors of the Holocaust where over 65,000 Austrian Jews were murdered as well as Nazi German rule. Haunting ad heart-breaking Leopoldstadt tells the truth of many 20th century Jewish families. Sir Tom Stoppard is regularly listed as one of the world’s best living playwrights, so Leopoldstadt is essential for fervent theatre fans.

 

 

Hymn

Written by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti, Hymn first gained acclaim through live stream and now can be seen in person. At the Almeida Theatre, Hymn is full of soul and sensitivity, which brings together two men who meet at a funeral. The power of male friendship is at the heart of this unusual, yet heart-warming play and it asks viewers to look closely at their own relationships. It uses music effectively to add to the drama within the story.

 

 

Wicked

Wicked never loses popularity and its still possible to go and see this huge hit of a show at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in the West End. Since 2006 the play has called this theatre home and rightly so. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire Wicked gives us the backstory of the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz and gives us another chance to immerse ourselves in the fantasy land of Oz. Wicked has won over 100 international awards and ranks amongst the longest-running West End musicals of all-time. Covid has not dampened its popularity and visitors to London often put Wicked on their must-do list when stopping in the city.

 

 

Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen made its way to the West End from Broadway in 2019. A teen drama that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, Evan Hansen is given the chance of a lifetime and what he’s always dreamed of – a chance to fit in. Playing at London’s Noel Coward Theatre, Dear Evan Hansen is a coming-of-age classic, winner of many awards and now a Universal Picture film, released in September 2021. Theatre fans won’t want to miss the chance to see the show before the new film.

 

 

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

A play that needs no introduction but simply cannot be missed off a list looking at shows we need to see now we’re allowed! The most awarded play in history, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a simple two-part stage series bringing together the work of JK Rowling and Jack Thorne. It’s back in the West End this October and takes us back to the wizarding world 17 years after the final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

 

 

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Once a humble BBC Three documentary and now a huge sell-out musical on the West End, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a modern-day fairy tale you mustn’t miss. Back in 2011, BBC Three showed the documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16 and this story has been developed and adapted into the fabulous show we see today. It tells the tale of a determined and unforgettable 16-year-old committed to his dream and not allowing anyone to get in his way. Life-affirming and unforgettable, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie could not be more fun if it tried.

 

 

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Baz Luhrmann’s unforgettable Moulin Rouge movie is nearly 20 years old, but the stage show is new, exciting and a huge hit. Freedom, beauty, truth and love are shown off in spectacular glamour in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Wowing audiences on Broadway, the show has moved over to the Piccadilly Theatre for British audiences to enjoy. Going all out, the Piccadilly is also giving its exterior Parisian makeover to truly get theatergoers in the mood.

 

 

Frozen

No one with children will be able to choose any show but Frozen if they’re planning a London trip. 2013 was the year that Frozen took over our lives and the hit song “Let it Go” entered every household, whether you have kids or not, you can be sure a niece, nephew or even neighbour was singing along. 2021 is the year you can get back into the Frozen swing and those ever-popular songs will be back. Playing at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Elsa and Anna take over the stage and a snowy wonderland becomes the scene for our dramatic tale. New songs and a fantastic production combine to create a new and bound-to-be-beloved classic.

 

 

Cinderella

Undoubtedly the most talked-about production and theatrical launch of the whole year. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella is his first release in six years and his talents combined with those of Oscar-winning writer Emerald Fennell create a show which cannot be missed. Webber asserts his Cinderella is both feisty and fiery, so this tale is a little different to the one we know and love. A new take on an enduring classic, Cinderella is showing at the Gillian Lynne Theatre.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all the shows on in the West End right now. Writers and directors have months’ worth of work to unleash and productivity in the industry is higher than ever and excitement and buzz build around the West End once again. Many of the top shows from the West End also make their way up north and if you’re local to us, you can enjoy many fantastic shows at the Blackpool Grand too.
