Most Likely To Be Funny – Were you the class clown and just assumed your great humour was a gift you were born with? Or are you always titled “the funny friend” who is always up for a joke? Have you always wondered where you got your gift of making everyone cry with laughter on a daily basis? Perhaps it’s actually down to your name!
At Blackpool Grand Theatre, we love a bit of comedy and having a laugh. So we wanted to find out exactly what name makes you the most funny in the UK! Taking a deep dive into the data, we compiled a list of all the UK-born comedians – both past and present – to be able to determine the names of those most funny!
From our research, we can finally reveal the top three male names of the funniest people! Are you one of them?..
Men Most Likely To Be Funny
1. John
2. David
3. Simon / Richard ~
The funniest name is John! With most of the male UK comedians named this, sharing this name is statistically proven to lead you to a comedy career!!
Congratulations all you John’s out there. In the words of John Cleese, “Creativity is not a talent. It is a way of operating.” So John, continue being creative!
Or maybe you were named after the likes of John Bishop or John Cleese?
In second place, Davids have been found to be quite a laugh, followed by Simon and Richard in joint third place.
Now, you know who the funniest male is, but who is the funniest female?
Women Most Likely To Be Funny
Katherine/Catherines out there are officially the funniest women in the UK. But are you more of a Catherine Tate kind of funny or a Katherine Ryan?!
Also, a big congratulations to all the Jo’s. You, along with the likes of Jo Brand and Jo Caulfiend, are hilarious! Marias and Helens can be pretty entertaining too, with it being a popular comedian name in the UK.
Comedy in the UK
Andrew Howard, head of marketing and brand at Blackpool Grand Theatre comments on the findings: “There you have it! Research has officially crowned all the Johns and Catherines in our lives as the funniest people, as people with this name are most likely to be comedians! It’s been great to run this study as comedy is important to us at Blackpool and we like a laugh ourselves – I think Andrew should actually be in the top three!
Comedy in the UK has evolved so much over time, but the one thing that has remained the same is that it brings people together to share an evening of fun and a lot of laughter. At the Blackpool Grand Theatre we have been keen to re-open our doors for some time now to give you all that exact experience. We have emerging artists performing at our theatres in the coming months as well as household names you will all know including Alan Carr and Rob Beckett – and if you’re a John or Catherine, get in touch and we’ll see about getting you added to the stage!”

Methodology
Blackpool Grand Theatre compiled a list of all of the UK born comedians, using reliable sources from the internet. Once had a list of 100s of comedians, a tally of these names were then calculated to reveal the most popular male and female comedian name, therefore, giving us the “most likely to be funny” names.
