Salisbury Woodland Gardens a great open space in Blackpool, bordered by East Park Drive and Woodside Drive, linking Blackpool Zoo with Stanley Park. Known to many as the ‘Woodland Gardens’, the site was acquired in 1924 and was developed simply as a shelter belt for the adjacent Stanley Park Golf Course. The gardens were later developed in the 1940s as an arboretum and public open space. Peter Perry and his ‘Flying Squad (see below) renovated it in 1967.

Stanley Park is Blackpool’s main Park and covers an incredible 104 hectares (260 acres) approx. The Park has a great selection of sporting provisions, along with beautiful formal gardens, cricket ground, a boating lake and woodland area. It was designed and built in the 1920s, by Thomas Mawson.

The largest gardens feature a fountain built with Italian marble and a number of statues including a pair of Medici Lions. The Italian gardens which are overlooked by an Art Deco style cafe, designed by Mawson. Steps take you down to the boating lake. Surrounding the large boating lake is some woodland, with a protected area for wildlife. An amphitheatre can be found next to the lake surrounding a bandstand, designed by Mawson.

In the centre of the park stands a clock tower, dedicated to William Cocker. Within this area you can find a large children’s play area, tennis courts, all-weather pitches, BMX track, skate park and general grassy areas.

Within the grounds stands a 5,000-seat cricket ground, an 18-hole golf course designed by Alister MacKenzie, a sports centre, bowling greens, athletics ground and model village.

The temptation is start walking north, however a look to the south is of interest also (Blackpool to Lytham St. Anne’s shoreline) as you will see miles of empty sands backed by extensive dunes. Nature and the dunes are a great temptation from the glittering Golden Mile.

Head down on your left (Princess Way), Passing Anchorsholme Park on your right, you reach Vue Cinema. Continue down Rossall Promenade passing Rossall School and its grounds. Pass Rossall Point Watch Tower all the way to Marine Hall and Fleetwood Lifeboat Station.
