Who doesn’t know and love The Addams Family? This satirical inversion of what the ideal American family should be has been popular for the last decades. As a close-knit family, the Addams’ have supernatural abilities and macabre interests.

The popular characters of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Lurch, and Thing have delighted and terrified with their “unconventional” tastes. Created by Charles Addams in 1938, The Addams Family is beloved by all generations.

Did you know? MC Hammer wrote an award-winning song for the 1991 film? The song played in the first few weeks the film was in the theatres.

Who Was Charles Addams?

An American cartoonist famous for his macabre and dark humour characters, Charles Addams is the creator of The Addams Family. Over his entire life, he drew over 1,300 cartoons, some of which appeared on TV Guide and on Collier’s alongside The New Yorker.

Distantly related to the US presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, Charles’ characters have appeared in calendars, merchandise, books, films, TV shows, and more. In fact, it wasn’t until the 1964 TV show came out that The Addams Family received their individual names.

TV Adaptations of The Addams Family

The Addams Family series (1964-66) was the first adaptation of these characters to feature the famous intro tune. Known for the harpsichord accompaniment and the finger-snapping, it’s almost impossible not to hum to.

The show was shot in black and white, providing an added sense of mystery and creepiness to an already strange family. Hollywood produced two films, coming out in 1991 and 1993 respectively, with acclaimed actors such as Anjelica Huston, the late Raúl Juliá, Christopher Lloyd, and Christina Ricci.
